Editor's Review:
Books Should Be Free is a free online audiobook download website, that offers users the chance to get their hands on a broad collection of audiobooks without paying a single penny for the privilege! As with LibriVox, Books Should Be Free offers members a wide range of audio-recorded, digital copies of books in the public domain, meaning if classic books are your thing, you could definitely be onto a winner with this service. Books Should Be Free is a classic social enterprise – it has a simple mission, ‘to make books in the public domain free in audio format’ for all to enjoy – and is funded entirely by donations and the work of volunteers. We love sites like this, not only because the books themselves are free, but also because they open up access to classic works to a wider audience, which can only be a good thing.
Books Should Be Free has a large compendium of digital audiobooks, all recorded by volunteers and funded entirely by donations. Users can check out audio versions of works by renowned authors such as William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and the Bronte sisters, with each and every copy being free of charge, every time. While the recordings lack the polish you would expect from a service such as Audible.com, they do have a certain personality, which we very much enjoyed. Finding the perfect book couldn’t be easier, with users being able to search by author, title, keyword or genre; or simply by browsing the “Top 100” to see what’s being listened to the most. With new books added throughout the year, as volunteers complete their recordings, there’s always something new to be found at Books Should Be Free.
A clear disadvantage of these sites (shared by similar sites such as LibriVox and Project Gutenberg) is that the books on offer do not include new releases, recent best-sellers or other such products that are offered by other services. If that is an issue, then Audible.com (our number 1 reviewed site in this category) or another similar service is almost certainly better suited to your needs. If not, then Books Should Be Free is a great place to start extending your library of audiobooks! Besides, even if you’re already a member of another subscription site, Books Should Be Free is a great place to supplement your purchases with audio versions of classic novels as, of course, it’s completely free of charge to all end-users!
