Editor's Review:
iTunes is, without doubt, one of the most recognisable brand names on the internet today. The iTunes Store originally began retailing online music downloads in 2003 and began offering audiobook downloads (alongside movies, apps and a range of other media) shortly afterwards. iTunes serves many millions of users every year and in 2011 the iTunes Store service sold its sixteen-billionth song, more than any other service online. The popularity of this service is undoubtedly due to the fact that it is so user-friendly - it really couldn’t be easier to find the items you’re looking for. With iTunes, the books you love are only a few clicks away!
The iTunes store contains more than 22,000 hours of audiobooks, all of which are of the highest possible quality. The books on offer at iTunes Store are created and provided by the Audible service (and indeed, if a user signs up to the iPod version of delivery with the Audible.com service, they are directed to iTunes to download their purchases), meaning users can guarantee that their purchases will always sound great. Members can check out a fantastic range of bestsellers, often released on iTunes at the same time as the printed version is released in stores. There’s also a great collection of radio shows, podcasts, standup comedy, lectures, speeches and more, meaning there’s always something to download regardless of what interests you.
Unlike other services we have reviewed in this category, all purchases from the iTunes store are made on an a la carte basis – meaning there’s no need to worry about lengthy or expensive subscriptions. Members can add funds to their account in advance using their bank cards or pre-paid gift cards that can be bought in a multitude of high-street stores, or simply charge their purchases to their bank accounts on-the-go by linking their iTunes account to their bank account. If you don’t already have an iTunes account, it’s easy and quick to create one, meaning you can be up and running (and downloading!) in a matter of minutes. Finally, with the new iCloud service being rolled out for all users, getting your purchases from your computer to your devices has really never been easier – simply hook up your devices to a wireless internet connection and let iTunes do all of the work!
As you would expect, all books at the iTunes store are priced individually, with prices depending on the length and popularity of the book in question. Whilst high-end audiobooks such as those in the Harry Potter series can retail for around $30+ per book, others can be picked up for as little as $5 a time. From time to time the store also operates a range of special offers and discounts, including its regular free-book giveaway, which is great for regular users and one-off purchasers alike.
iTunes is a great choice for those who want the flexibility of using one account for all of their digital media purchases, without having to compromise on the availability and variety of books on offer.
